Overview
Sardis was a mining city, and it is still a city of miners. Its wealth was drawn from veins of silver and copper that run beneath the surrounding hills, and for generations the shafts and the processing yards fed the city, its palace, and every karthaav who sat in it. The people of Sardis are the hardest-working of the Free Cities and carry themselves that way: miners who could fight if it ever came to that, and who have rarely been asked to.
Veins do not run forever. By the present age the richest tunnels are worked out, the yards run slow, and the city's fortunes have slipped with them; fresh whitewash on the palace walls does not change what the hillsides say. House Sardis, the founding line, is long gone from the seat. The city is ruled by House Stannard, and in the present age by Aldric Stannard, an administrator with a heavy ledger and thinning options.
